Security guards role during fire outbreak

Fire breakouts are more than you think - especially in the commercial areas. While being handy with a fire extinguisher is always great, hiring a trained professional, who can detect but also prevent a fire accident. A security guard - trained for dealing with such accidents - is an asset.

A fire-watch security guard is often the first person at the scene of fire at his workplace. Thus, they have to play an active role in preventing damage to property and life. The role of a security guard in case of fire consists of two parts - detecting and preventing the breakout, and securely evacuating the people.

One of the most essential duties of security guards is to prevent fire. While patrolling or maintaining the post, a security guard has to keep a watch on potential hazards. Not only are they responsible for checking any combustible or flammable items, but also they regularly inspect fire extinguishers to make sure that they have not been damaged and haven’t passed their listed expiry dates.

In case of a fire, once a smoke is detected, the security guards first responsibility is to activate the alarm, so that the occupants, employees and other uncertified persons can leave the building safely. During fire emergencies, most people do not remember to call the fire department as they are too preoccupied with getting themselves to safety. However, it is a safety personnels duty to inform the fire department, as well as other authorities, about the accident.

Evacuation is one of the trickiest duties during such situations. When everyone is trying to get out in a frenzy, evacuation routes may sometimes be blocked. Since a security guard has appropriate knowledge about various evacuation routes and procedures, they can take charge and coordinate foot traffic to make sure everyone comes out of the building safely. The human relations skills incorporated into security guard training will also prove crucial here.

Being trained in basic first aid the security personnels can also help any injured person(s), until the arrival of the medical team.
